Do you ever just wake up excited for the day? I mean an ordinary, run-of-the-mill, middle of the week, non-holiday kind of day? And by excited I mean full of expectation, energetic, jumping for joy, what can I do to shine for God wooohooo kind of excited! Let’s get this party started kind of day?
Yea, me neither.
Most of the time I open my eyes, roll back over and bury my head in the pillow. Even coffee has a hard time jump-starting this girl into action. I am not a morning person. Not. A. Morning. Person.
Most of us have come to expect tomorrow. We take our days for granted. As a result, we waste many of them by just getting through with as little effort as possible. Guilty? Raise your hand. No one is looking.
For some reason the movie “Groundhog Day” with Bill Murray comes to mind. Yes, perhaps I am old. (I just googled it. It was released in 1993!) You know the movie, right? The main character keeps reliving the same ole day over and over again. After endless days of this, he finally starts doing things to make every day count. He begins to anticipate things that will happen to people and tries to step in to help them avoid misfortune. He shows kindness. He takes time to get to know, really know people. Listening with intention. Everyone starts to love him. He becomes the most popular guy in town. He is living his very best life! Prior to making the most of his everyday, he was just a cynical, rude, and miserable human being that no one liked.
Friends, we can all be guilty of having just a little bit of that in us especially on ordinary run-of-the-mill, common, average, nothing special kind of days!
So how do we wake-up celebrating each day? Is it possible to wake up excited for Tuesday or as some people call it the second Monday of the week? Is it unrealistic to think that every day can be full of exuberant life? Maybe. But, shouldn’t we try?
What would that look like? Perhaps, we would be more grateful when we woke up each morning that we actually woke up, that we had been given another day! After all, some people did not wake up this morning. What if you paused before you went to sleep tonight and thought about the fact that today could have been your last day? What would you change tomorrow? When you wake up to another day – do it!!!
If you are anything like me, I love giving gifts. When I buy them, I struggle to hold onto them until the occasion. I am just like a little kid! Giddy with excitement. What if we woke up each day not knowing who we would be giving to before the end of the day was over but knowing that each day we were going to, at the very least, give a small part of ourselves to someone. Kindness, perhaps? Smiles do not cost a thing! Doesn’t the idea of being a benefactor to an unexpectant person excite you?
The last time I was at the grocery store I conducted my own little social experiment. On every aisle I purposely made eye contact with the people walking toward me and smiled. Even the most sour faced person smiled back. It made me feel great! I was exhilarated!
I do not claim to know what it will take for you to wake up excited about living an exuberant life everyday. I think that is something that people have to conclude for themselves. However, I do believe that it all begins by giving of ourselves. It is not about what we get but what we give that inspires us. If you are not waking up excited, you are not living an inspired life.
Listen to, invest in, and love others. Wake up asking to whom you can be a blessing to today. Even more fun? Do it anonymously.
It does not have to cost a thing. A smile. A hug. A genuine compliment. Hold the door for someone.
Be purposeful in being nice to at least one person everyday. Don’t go to sleep until you do. If it is late at night, message someone, email them – tell them that they are important to you. Expect nothing in return!
I challenge you. What do you have to lose? A bad attitude? An attitude of complacency? A frown? Stop living the same day over and over again and waking up with dread. Are you in the midst of your very own groundhog day?
