I caught myself telling God yesterday that as soon as I finished a task that I was doing that I was going to write in my prayer journal. It bothered me when I said it and has bothered me since. I later stumbled upon a quote by Corrie Ten Boom “Is God your steering wheel or your spare tire?” Coincidence? It did not stop there. The next thing that caught my attention was a post by Joyce Meyer saying something to the effect of do not work God into your schedule, work your schedule around God.
God still speaks to us. He speaks to our hearts and to our minds. He speaks to us in so many ways. We often shrug it off and rationalize our reasons. We tell God we are busy. Sometimes we are so involved in our own busyness that we do not even hear. Sometimes we just flat out ignore Him.
What would it look like if we made God a priority in our lives instead of treating Him like an option? Pause and give that some serious thought. I know I have!
So often I have given God the leftovers! In the past, I have run to God after I have made a mess of things asking Him to help with the clean up rather than going to Him to ask for help with the planning. I am sure that I am not the only one.
We are quick to text, call, or message our friends or loved ones but how many of us truly converse with God? How many of us do everything else first? Let’s be honest, how many of us throw God into our pile of obligations– our must do’s instead of our want to do’s?
When I entertain company, I offer them consideration. I make an effort to make them feel comfortable. I serve dinner on real plates, not paper! I listen enthusiastically and participate in conversation. I give them my very best! I am guilty of not giving God even close to equivalent consideration at times. That makes me very sad and very ashamed.
When we become Christians, we are acknowledging that God is royalty in our lives and that we are his willing servants. God is our guest for life, not just for 45 minutes on Sunday! He wants to spend every day with us. I think it is harder sometimes because we do not physically see that he is with us.
What if we set a place for Him at dinner tonight just to remind us that he is present?
I believe that we should do whatever is necessary to make God the number one priority in our lives everyday! God never intended for our relationship with Him to be passive in nature. Love is an action word and God is love!
Here are some ideas of things we can do to visually remind ourselves that God is with us and we are in His presence.
- Set a place at the table for Him.
- Put a note on your bathroom mirror that says, “Good Morning God! I love you!”
- If you drive a lot in your job, place a Bible in the passenger seat or buckle up the seat belt to remind you that He is there.
- Change your ring tone to one that makes you think of God every time your phone rings!
- Talk to Him about anything and everything. You do not have to use formal words.
Basically, anything that you would do for someone special in your life that is present, do the same for God. Make God your imaginary friend for a day!
I actually did this and found myself smiling and joyful at the thought that I was spending the day with THE King. I had His complete undivided attention for a whole day! The next day, I was more mindful of His presence and honestly wanted to take Him with me wherever I went. I wanted my not so imaginary friend with me!
My suggestions may not work for you. Your reminders might look very different from mine. I pray that you find a way that works for you to remind yourself of His continual presence. Let’s not make God an out of sight, out of mind any longer but rather a conversation and presence that we cannot imagine being without!
