Sometimes things and people are not what they appear to be on the outside. I am sure most everyone is familiar with the saying that you cannot judge a book by its cover. A book can have a grand cover and many blank pages or pages filled with words that you do not understand. People can be like that – shallow and hard to understand or figure out. Although I try not to judge, sometimes you do not even have to “open the cover” to read a person like a book. Then, there are those other times that you read the flap and become convinced to buy the book and realize that the best parts were only on the cover.
What if we got to read a person’s book first and then we got to design their cover? What if we wrote the little blurb on the flap or back cover? What would it say? What would your cover look like if someone else got to design it? Would anyone want to read your book if the cover truly represented what was inside?
God is doing just that. He sees the inside. He knows what our covers should look like, what they should say. Titles like liar, selfish, adulterer, thief, sinner, hurtful, inconsiderate of others should fill the shelves. I am humbled to know that although I deserve less, the title that appears on my cover is “Forgiven.”
As much as we try to hide behind pretty “covers” God still sees. Wearing a suit does not a gentleman make. A gentleman says hello, shakes your hand, cares about the feelings of others, conducts himself in a proper and polite way, does not try to tarnish the reputation of others, is honest and true, chivalrous, and courteous. God looks beyond the suit. He watches how we treat others. He looks to see if our cover matches our heart.
You can hide a landfill behind trees but it still stinks from miles away.
Make sure that your cover matches what is on the inside. Spend more on the inside than the fancy suit on the outside. The suit often only fools the one wearing it. Great men wear suits but jerks do too! Some gentlemen wear jeans…
Until next time,
*Fairfield, you are a true gentleman to the core. I am so proud to be your wife and doing life with you.
